PROJECT DETAILS
This poster was designed as part of the AIGA Get Out the (Women’s) Vote poster design campaign of 2020, commemorating the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment.
While the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment is a momentous occasion and indeed worthy of celebration, intersectionality is crucial. As it was not until the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965 that women of all races were finally granted the right to vote, I felt it important for my Get Out the Women’s Vote poster to focus on the voices and skin tones that were not validated until long after 1920. At the same time, my poster is inspired by the micro-aggressions, subtleties, and hostilities that are a part of the experience of womanhood. My poster is inspired by my incredibly strong mother, who raised me alone while working full-time in a factory, providing me with a whole, wantless upbringing. It is inspired by her stories of workplace sexual harassment, and countless women’s stories of abuse, underpayment, revocation of bodily autonomy, and condescension. Purple is the chosen color in homage of the women who started the movement for women’s suffrage. The visual style is an homage to Russian constructivist activism design. With three fists raised in the air, from badass, modern women of all skin tones who are no longer willing to tolerate the status quo, my hope is to move women into action: to vote out the candidates who seek to harm them, and to vote for candidates who have their best interests at heart.
